We had a reservation to tour the Hearst Castle at San Simeon at 9:20 am, but got there early enough to take the 8:20 tour instead. The day began bright and sunny; after the previous day’s rain, the world looked new. The castle at the top of it’s hill is like something from a fairy tale. We toured one of the eight bedroom (!) guest houses, the ground floor of the main house, and a portion of the grounds. That's the main house behind Jackie, the other photo is one of the guest houses! As impressive as the grounds was the portrait our guide painted of Hearst himself -- powerful, assured, imperious, probably the most influential American of first half of the 20th century.
We left San Simeon around 11:30 and spent the balance of the day crossing Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Riverside Counties to get to Palm Springs in time for a late dinner with Bob and Carole Arenson – friends from Evanston, Ill who are renting a home in Palm Springs for 4 months.
