Today is a short 90 mile drive to San Ignacio, which is south and inland, but still close enough to the Pacific to be a good base for whale-watching tours. We arrived around 11 am to what feels like a tropical oasis. There is a spring-fed pond nearby and the valley is filled with date palms originally planted by the missionaries in the 1700s. It is only a short walk to the center of the town, with a traditional town square across from the 18th century stone mission church. And it is warm.
We sat around and just visited and enjoyed the setting before walking to town to buy a few souvenirs and relax at the outdoor seating in a cafe on the square. We met an American woman, from San Francisco, who owns the 3-room Casa Lereé hotel, along with an nice bookstore. She came to visit 5 years ago, fell in love with the place, bought the hotel and seems happy with her new life. Not for us!
Back in the campground, we had a happy hour with announcements of adjustments to the whale-watching schedule. Folks then split up for dinner on their own – we ate with some of our friends right there in the camp restaurant.
